An ICO file is an icon container used by Windows and by websites as a favicon. Unlike a PNG, one ICO file holds several copies of the same image at different sizes, from 16x16 up to 256x256 pixels. Windows or the browser then picks the size that fits each spot.

Rename the downloaded file to favicon.ico and upload it to the root folder of your site. Then add <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico"> inside the <head> of your pages. Our step-by-step favicon guide also covers WordPress and the Apple touch icon.

Every file contains 9 sizes: 16, 20, 24, 32, 40, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels square. That covers browser tabs, the Windows taskbar, File Explorer views and high-DPI screens.

Use a square PNG of at least 256x256 pixels with a transparent background. Smaller images are scaled up and lose sharpness. Non-square images are centered on a transparent square, so nothing gets cropped. Each file can be up to 10 MB.
